“The Aspire brochure says, ‘New Chapters Every Day.’ We can’t wait to begin this new chapter.”
– Keane Britton & Jane Graettinger
Ten years ago, Keane Britton’s late husband, Bill, asked her what she might do if something happened to him. “Probably move next door to my sister,” she replied, not thinking at the time that it would become a reality. After Bill died and Keane retired, she and her sister, Jane, began thinking about what they wanted to do for the rest of their lives.
“There were certain things we knew for sure. We didn’t want to own a house. We didn’t want to invest our nest egg in a ‘buy-in’ fee at a Community Care Retirement Community. We wanted to stay in Richmond. And we wanted to live next door to one another.”
Keane and her sister started their search in the Richmond area when they read an article about a new community being built called Aspire at Carriage Hill. The community seemed to offer everything they felt was important, a Richmond location, social and fitness programs, dining and, most importantly, maintenance-free living. Intrigued, Keane called for an appointment.
“I think we surprised them with our eagerness,” laughed Keane. “There we were, checkbooks in hand, ready to commit if we liked what we saw.”
And they did. Keane and Jane were numbers 1 and 2 on the Aspire at Carriage Hill reservation list, choosing adjacent apartments on the first floor. Always collaborators, the two sisters did their homework and wrote down all their monthly expenses and compared them to the monthly rental fee at Aspire.
“We were happy to learn the cost of living at Aspire was comparable to living in our current homes, but without the maintenance and upkeep of owning a home.”
Keane admits that downsizing from a large home to an 800 square foot apartment has its challenges. “A friend pointed out that while our private space is decreasing, our living space will actually be larger because of all the amenities available to us in the community.”
Keane and Jane are eagerly looking forward to the next chapter in their lives. “The Aspire brochure says, ‘New Chapters Every Day.’ We can’t wait to begin this new chapter.”
